Disney completes the updates to the Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom

There is a separate wheelchair accessible entrance where your party can wait to board their boat. There is a pole to grab on to help stabilize your boarding process in addition to Cast Members who will assist guests as needed. The music in the queue is also fun, including listening to what the announcer has to say. The Standby Line for Jungle Cruise is typically the lowest first thing in the morning and at the end of the evening. The middle of the day will see the longest lines with sustained wait times of over 60 minutes.

An opening-day attraction at Magic Kingdom has changed with the times

Disney World’s commitment to promoting a more inclusive experience is evident in the modifications made to the Jungle Cruise. The ride has removed outdated stereotypes and insensitive jokes, replaced certain animatronic animals, and introduced new scenes to reflect a more culturally sensitive perspective. However, in the years that followed, Jingle Cruise became more elaborate, and it’s now a beloved holiday tradition at Magic Kingdom (sorry, Disneyland guests –– Jingle Cruise hasn’t returned to the West Coast since 2017!). Now, the overlay’s story goes that decorations and gifts were scattered across the jungle after an accidental drop from a cargo plane flying overhead. Each of the boats in the Jungle Cruise fleet gets a festive Christmastime name, along with twinkling lights and garland, too. Most importantly, the outdated depictions and problematic scenes have been removed. Ironically, before becoming known for its laughs and silly jokes, the attraction as a whole was initially more of a serious tone with only a few jokes inserted here and there. Sail past the impressive Schweitzer falls which is named after the famous Dr. Albert Falls. You will pass by your Skippers pet python snake and a camp being broken down by Gorillas.

Unlike the classic Katharine Hepburn-Humphry Bogart film, the original Jungle Cruise had very little humor, outside of “The Backside of Water” gag that remains to this day. Even then, some Jungle Cruise skippers improvised gags about the animals like the all-too stiff python. After all, it was inspired by a documentary –– and Walt wanted the attraction to be just as educational. One particular Disney Imagineer, Harper Goff, had an affinity for the 1951 adventure film The African Queen. This film, which stars Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn (and the titular “character”, a steamboat named the African Queen), was referenced by Goff in quite a few ideas relating to the Jungle Cruise. Ultimately, he drew inspiration from the steamer in the movie for the boats of the Jungle Cruise, creating a smaller but quite similar ride vehicle. However, keep in mind some of the animals on the cruise are very realistic and may scare little ones.

If you’re riding it at rope drop, most of the Adventureland crowds are headed in this direction. You’ll wait on the bridge by the entrance until that side of the park opens and then follow the crowds into the queue. Once aboard the boats, guests are introduced to their skipper and they head into the jungle, allegedly never to return. Passengers then glide precariously under the first of a pair of stone arches severely damaged by an earthquake centuries ago. These are part of the ruins of an ancient Cambodian city where a crumbling temple is one of the few things which have managed to avoid tumbling into the river. Here passengers see an Indochinese tiger, giant spiders, king cobras and mugger crocodiles.

After they exit, they come across an elephant bathing pool where numerous Indian elephants are relaxing in the water. The cruise concludes after the boat narrowly avoids being sprayed by water from one of the elephants. The first installation of the ride was featured at Disneyland for its grand opening in 1955. A variety of changes were made over the years, including enhanced audio effects, updates to the storyline, and the removal of culturally-sensitive material. The installation at Hong Kong Disneyland features a significantly different storyline from the other parks and provides guests with three different language options, each with its own line queue.

The story goes that when Walt planned Disneyland he originally wanted guests to be able to take a boat ride past real animals. That was deemed infeasible, and instead animatronic animals were used and the Jungle Cruise was born. Over about 12 minutes, guests are taken around the world past various scenes populated by the animals. As an outdoor attraction, the Jungle Cruise takes guests on a journey through an artificial river landscape, complete with animatronic animals and lush jungle scenery. Certain sections of the ride are covered, providing shade and enhancing the overall experience. The Jungle Cruise, a flagship attraction at both Disneyland and Disney World, offers guests a whimsical voyage through exotic landscapes filled with animatronic animals and engaging skippers.
